Make Do & Mend.
We are working differently in schools because of the recent pandemic COVID-19. We left school in march up until now (September 17). Due to the pandemic we have new limits; we cannot leave the classroom to take photos or even use the darkroom, this doesn't help with the current projects we were wanting to do. So we have decided to start a new project called make do and mend and literally make do with what resources we have and where we can go and use them. With the new pandemic limits and rules this is going to make us more creative in the way we use things , for example the windows we could use fort light and shadows.
The phrase 'Mae do and mend' suggests that they just get on with the resources they have around them and use it creatively.

Instructions
Some artists have used the idea of rules or instructions to help them become more creative. Artists like John Baldisseri have used instructions in their teaching of young art students. Some artists have made instruction based art, like the American Sol LeWit and 'The Photographers' Playbook' contains '307 Assignments' designed to help image makers get out of a creative rut.
i then experimented writing my own , here are some examples:
- photograph something outside of the window.
-take a photograph at 6pm.
-photograph something that represents your future.
-stand outside at 5am and photograph the road.

Marcel Duchamp & The Readymade
Leonardo’s picture is very famous because he uses a number of unique techniques to draw the viewer in. Another reason it is famous is because of the story behind it; the ‘Mona Lisa’ was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 for 2 years. It was then recovered and is now behind bulletproof glass to protect it from being vandalised or stolen (again). Duchamp has added a moustache to the ‘Mona Lisa’ which is very strange seeing as though she is a lady and men are usually the one to have beards and moustaches. Duchamp also added the letters “L.H.O.O.Q” to the Mona Lisa. It is a cheap postcard reproduction. The readymade of Marcel Duchamp are ordinary objects that the artist has chosen as an antidote to what he called “retinal art”.
Hannah Höch collage analysis
I can see an old wheel in the bottom left corner, I can also see a women's headless body in the bottom half of the page. In the top right-hand corner, there is a large wig, just behind that there is a head which looks like its poking out from behind. On the right-hand side of the page there are BMW logos from top to bottom. In the middle of the page it looks like there is some sort of machinery going through the middle of the woman's body.
The part of the image that my eyes really focus on is the lightbulb as the women's head because this lightbulb is lighter in colour compared to everything else in the image. It is in the direct eye line of whoever's seeing the image for the first time. Lightbulbs can represent when someone has a good idea or if they are smart thinkers. There seem to be two types of image in this collage, for example there are women's body parts (there's a hand in the top right, there's also a large scale wig in the top left hand corner) and there also seems to be car or machinery parts mixed up in the image (there is a machinery part in the middle of the collage) it seems like Hannah has had two opposite pictures and decided to mix them together.
The title of the image is completely the opposite to the image , the women has a missing head so we would never know if she was beautiful or not. The photographer could be making a point and saying actually anything can be beautiful no matter what it looks like. If I was to give the image a new title I would probably name it ‘together but not together’ because everything in the image goes with something else but there not necessarily near or the same size as one another for example the women and the wig are supposed to be together but in the image they are separated and are different scale sizes another example is the tire and the car logos , the car needs wheels to make the car move and travel safely but in the picture they are on opposite sides of the collage. The three adjectives I would use to describe this image are:

- Different – I've chosen this word because I've never seen a collage similar to this.
- Unplanned- I chose this image because this image doesn’t look like it had been planned or been layed out before sticking it down which is what I like about it.
- Complicated- I chose the word complicated because it is a bit of a puzzle and find out which images are linked together.
- Did you have any inspiration when making this picture?
- What is the real idea behind this image?
- What made you use the woman's body and the cars in the same image?
Matt Lipps research:
Matt Lipps is a photographer born in 1975 in Oakland , California. Matt Lipps has spent the past decade focusing on the relationship between sculpture and photography. In 2010 Matt served as a Assistant Professor at San Francisco State university. Matt Lipps has done 15 solo exhibitions and 6 collections.
I really enjoy his photography work and the way he arranges the photos to stand up in front of each other to make them look like one image. His first idea was to "cut out the lady and put her behind his bed to make it look like she's standing there" I feel like this is very creative and unusual. |

Make Do and Mend: Making Day #1
Edited images
Evaluation:
My final outcome turned out to be very different and random. I chose to present my ideas in a very random way in that I didn't think about where to put them I just tried different ways and see which one I liked best. When I had finished sticking everything down I went over to the photocopier and changed the colour of the image itself to pink, I found this very interesting and fun to play around with. The last photo in the gallery is my final piece and the copied piece in colour. My piece was based off of adventures and trying different things , for example you can see a aeroplane wing in the bottom left corner. My creation did go to plan and I was very pleased with the final outcome. If I had more time I probably would have experimented with different colours and see which works best which would be too dark and which would be too light.
Prison photography:
I am interested in prison photography because it is something that I have never seen before for example photographs been taken in a prison , photographs are usually of the outside world or in peoples homes never in a prison. A prison cell is like the COVID 19 lockdown for example not being able to leave or go anywhere other than to get food in which you would leave your prison cell to go down to the prison canteen area. You would also have to stay i you cell all day with other inmates this is like staying at home with your family all day. Some limitations could be that prisons wont let people in who are not visitors or coming in at visitor times, another limitation could be some staff or inmates might not want to be photographed or included in the activity.

Klavdij Sulab has worked with prisoners in the former Soviet Union , France , Ireland and elsewhere. He decided to start photography in prisons because he is a concerned citizen and everything he does he thinks of the people in prison. He gives the prisoners a single use camera which allows them to see art in a different way and which they wouldn't see everyday. Klavidij is interested in working with teenagers because it gives them a chance to photograph themselves and se their identity and rebuild themselves which are benefits for the inmates.

- Spare change
- The wheel of a car
- A blank wall
- A left foot
Evaluation
For this picture hunt we only had 60 minutes to find them all and photograph them, we also had to take them in order from number 1. This task was easy i didn’t have any challenges during this however some people may have not had some of the things listed eg. pasta.
Making Day #2
Evaluation
On my making day number two i decided to use photos from my webpage and photos from my previous making day to make a whole new collage.I then changed the colour of the image on the photocopier and used parts of them in the collage(the circles).
In the end i decided to use all the images and create a book with them. If i had more time i would have created 3 books of different sizes and photographed them all together. I feel this was a successful day even with us being restricted on resources and being in one place.

I decided to create a video of the whole book to show what it would look like. I like the video.
